FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Dec. 2 (UPI) -- Officials expect it will take up to three weeks to re-open a Fort Lauderdale courthouse after a weekend pipe rupture flooded two floors.
The Miami Herald said Tuesday the closure would delay everything from taking out a marriage license to the opening arguments in a major tobacco litigation trial.
"An old pipe bursting in an old building has brought our judicial
system to its knees," declared Broward Public Defender Howard Finkelstein. "This courthouse is one of the biggest disgraces in the state and the public continues to suffer."
The Herald said the gushing water knocked out computer and communications equipment and soaked thousands of files in the Broward County Clerk's office.
Fort Lauderdale residents rejected a ballot measure to build a new courthouse in 2006, and the Herald said the U.S. recession and higher construction costs mean it is unlikely the current building will be replaced any time soon.
