EDMONTON, Alberta, Nov. 30 (UPI) -- Canadian prosecutors say a foster mother in Edmonton has been convicted of manslaughter in the death of 3-year-old boy in her care.

A jury Saturday found the 34-year-old woman guilty of causing the boy's death in January 2007, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported Sunday.

Prosecutors, aided by the testimony of the boy's nanny, argued the boy died from a head injury caused by the foster mother, who claimed the child inflicted the injury on himself when he hit his head on a toilet in the bathroom of their home.

The nanny alleged she heard screaming and a thumping sound the night the boy died, the CBC reported, noting defense lawyers plan to appeal the verdict.
