MOSCOW, Nov. 29 (UPI) -- Russian military sources say they've carried out a successful test launch of their new submarine-fired Bulava intercontinental ballistic missile.

Citing an unnamed Russian official, RIA Novosti reported Saturday that a Bulava ICBM was successfully launched from a Dmitry Donskoi Typhoon-class strategic nuclear-powered submarine to a target at a test range in the remote Pacific coast region.

"The Bulava was launched from a submerged position in the White Sea toward a target located (4,000 miles away) at the Kura test site on the Kamchatka Peninsula," the source said.

It was the second test for the Bulava. An initial test-firing was conducted Sept. 18.

RIA Novosti said Russia is planning to deploy the new missiles for service with the Navy, and they will be featured in the commission of Russia's first Borey-class strategic nuclear submarine next year.
