Kashmir groups eyed in Mumbai attacks

MUMBAI, Nov. 29 (UPI) -- U.S. intelligence sources say they're focusing on the Kashmir terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba as the likely force behind this week's attacks in Mumbai, India.

Speaking anonymously, the spy officials said that while no definitive conclusions had been reached, early indications pointed to the involvement of the group, which is believed to be supported by elements of Pakistan's Directorate for Inter-Services Intelligence, or I.S.I, The New York Times reported Saturday.

Indian security officials, also speaking on the condition of anonymity, said they had determined that some of the attackers, who killed nearly 200 people, used non-Indian cellphones to communicate with callers from outside the country during the siege. There were reports some of the attackers had Blackberrys.

The Times said that U.S. officials have used communications intercepts to tie Lashkar and another Kashmiri group, Jaish-e-Muhammad, to past terror attacks aimed at Indian targets, and reported that may be the case this time, as well.

Lashkar-e-Taiba has denied any responsibility for the terrorist strikes, the newspaper said.
