Money pours into Ga. U.S. Senate runoff

ATLANTA, Nov. 28 (UPI) -- Campaign documents show that the Republicans are making a high-priced stand in Georgia's U.S. Senate runoff election.

USA Today said Friday that Republican incumbent Saxby Chambliss has been raking in significant contributions from major donors and interest groups as the GOP battles to prevent the Democrats from gaining the 60 seats needed to block a Senate filibuster.

"The amount of money coming into this (race) is unbelievable," said Bill Bozarth, executive director of Common Cause Georgia. "It almost makes me nostalgic for the days when we were a backwater election state."

Reports filed with the Federal Election Commission showed Chambliss with a wide edge in "large" contributions of $1,000 or more this month with donations from the National Rifle Association and the pro-business Americans for Job Security.

A spokesman for Democratic challenger Jim Martin told USA Today that they were getting their fair share of $1,000 donations and did not expect to their message to be drowned out before the Dec. 2 vote.
