SYDNEY, Nov. 22 (UPI) -- Pet shops would be banned from selling cats and dogs in the Australian state of New South Wales under a bill before the state parliament.
The measure was introduced by Clover Moore, the lord mayor of Sydney and a member of the lower house of parliament, The Age reported. If it becomes law, dogs and cats would only be available through recognized breeders, rescue groups and pounds.
Moore argues that pet shops encourage impulse buying of cats and dogs, with some owners ending up with unsuitable animals, and that many shops acquire their stock from unscrupulous breeders.
Her bill has many opponents -- including the Australian Veterinary Association. Opponents argue the ban goes too far and would drive the pet trade underground.
