Trial under way in shooting of Mormons

CHESAPEAKE, Va., Nov. 19 (UPI) -- Trial has started in Virginia for a man accused of shooting two Mormon missionaries who walked into a drug dispute on a rainy street in Chesapeake, killing one.

Lawyers for the prosecution and defense, who gave their opening statements Monday, agreed on much of what happened in January 2006, The Virginian-Pilot reported.

But the lawyer representing James Boughton Jr., 21, of Camelot, said Boughton was not the gunman.

Morgan Young, 21, of Bountiful, Utah, and Joshua Heidbrink, 19, of Greeley, Colo., were in Virginia on their two-year missions. They had just chained up their bicycles, preparing to knock on doors, when they heard a shot and saw a man wearing a hooded garment.

Young was shot in the shoulder, while Heidbrink died after being shot in the head.

Deputy Commonwealth's Attorney D.J. Hansen said Boughton was in the neighborhood to back up a friend who had a dispute with someone over drug money.
