Kennedy returns to U.S. Senate welcome

WASHINGTON, Nov. 18 (UPI) -- U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., says he "feels fine" and is eager to resume his duties six months after having a malignant brain tumor removed.

Kennedy, walking with a cane but smiling broadly, entered the Russell Caucus Room at the U.S. Capitol Monday, accompanied by his wife Vicki and his two dogs, eliciting a roar of applause, The Boston Globe reported.

"I feel fine," said Kennedy, 76. "I'm looking forward to the session … . I'm looking forward, particularly, to working with (U.S. President-elect) Barack Obama on healthcare."

Observers said Kennedy had lost weight and his voice trembled slightly, but on the whole looked spry and vigorous. The Globe reported Kennedy's color was strong, still sporting a full head of white hair and showing none of the puffiness evident during his last appearance on Capitol Hill in July.

The Caucus Room held a large banner that said "Welcome Back Senator!" and was filled with 100 or so Senate office aides and committee staffers, the newspaper said.
