Clinton endorses Obama in Washington

WASHINGTON, Nov. 18 (UPI) -- Former President Bill Clinton's global interests could be problematic for Hillary Clinton if she is nominated to be secretary of state, an observer said.

Bill Clinton's international business deals -- in particular a donor list of the Clinton Global Initiative foundation -- could mean the secretary of state in President-elect Barack Obama's administration might work diplomatically with his donor countries, CNN reported Tuesday.

"These are issues that I'm sure are being discussed, and they will have to be worked out, and it's legitimate to ask these questions," said James Carville, a former aide to the Clintons.

Two officials on Obama's transition team said the team was examining Bill Clinton's finances and activities after he left the White House. As part of the vetting process, the team is looking for negative information that could put Hillary Clinton's prospects as secretary of state into jeopardy, CNN said.

Obama and Hillary Clinton met last week in Chicago, fueling speculation that she's on the short list to be nominated as Obama's secretary of state.

The donor list of Bill Clinton's global foundation might show links to international figures favoring policies that might conflict with the Obama administration, sources told CNN.
