NEW YORK, Nov. 17 (UPI) -- New York police have arrested a man who allegedly tried to snatch the wallets of two people who lay dying after an automobile accident in Queens.

Evangelos Fotiou, 42, was charged with interfering with an investigation and larceny after authorities allegedly found him rummaging through the wreckage, New York's Daily News reported Monday.

Livery driver Bessy Velasquez and her passenger, Panayiota Demetriou, were killed Sunday when an SUV driven by Daryush Omar allegedly ran a red light and struck their vehicle.

Police claim Omar, a resident alien from Pakistan, had a blood alcohol level or more than twice the legal limit. At the time of the accident, he was out on bail pending a December court date on murder charges.

"This is human behavior at its worse," said a police source. "Two innocent lives were claimed by a man who already killed someone and a thug tried to take their money."
