ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, Nov. 17 (UPI) -- Three Pakistani soldiers were killed Monday when a suicide car bomber rammed a military checkpoint in northwestern Pakistan, officials said.

The attack occurred in a village in Swat Valley, near Pakistan's border with Afghanistan and about 186 miles from Islamabad, CNN reported.

The Pakistani central government hasn't exerted much control over the border area but began a military offensive during the summer to flush out militants, the cable news network said. In retaliation, the Taliban began a series of bombings, which Taliban leaders said would continue until troops withdrew.
