BAGHDAD, Nov. 13 (UPI) -- An Iraqi soldier opened fire on U.S. forces in northern Iraq, killing two and wounding six before he was fatally shot by U.S. troops, military officials said.

A U.S. military spokeswoman said the Iraqi soldier opened fire on the American soldiers unprovoked as soldiers were in a courtyard at the post in Nineveh province. Iraqi officials said the soldier fired on the troops after having words and a physical confrontation, the Los Angeles Times reported Thursday. After the Iraqi soldier began shooting in the courtyard, the Americans returned fire, killing the Iraqi.

Also Wednesday, the Iraqi Interior Ministry reported several bombings in Baghdad in which six people died and 31 people were wounded, CNN reported Thursday.

A car bomb exploded near an Iraqi police patrol in central Baghdad, killing four people and wounding 14 others, officials said.

Seven civilians were wounded when a roadside bomb exploded in a Shiite section of northeastern Baghdad, the ministry said. A car bomb also exploded in northeastern Baghdad, killing two people and wounding 10.

CNN reported that gunmen stormed a Christian family's house in Mosul, killing two sisters and wounding their mother. When police arrived to investigate, a bomb detonated outside the home's entrance, wounding three officers, authorities said.
