WASHINGTON, Nov. 12 (UPI) -- Most blacks asked say the election of Barack Obama was a dream come true and something they thought they'd never see, a CNN poll indicates.
Eighty percent of African-Americans surveyed for a CNN-Opinion Research Corp. poll released Wednesday said Obama's election was a dream come true, while 71 percent said they never thought a black presidential candidate would be elected during their lifetime.
Among white Americans, 28 percent said Obama's victory was a dream come true, while 70 percent said it wasn't, poll results indicated.
"Polls show that whites and blacks tend to have different views on the amount of racism in the United States," said CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "So it's not surprising that they would have different views on the likelihood of an African-American president."
The CNN-Opinion Research Corp. telephone poll was conducted Thursday-Sunday with 1,246 adult Americans, including 310 blacks and 807 non-Hispanic whites. The overall margin of error is 3 percentage points. The margin of error for racial breakdowns is 5.5 percentage points.
