TALLINN, Estonia, Nov. 12 (UPI) -- U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates sought to reassure the Baltic States of continued U.S. and NATO support while in Estonia Wednesday.
Secretary Gates met with his counterparts from the three Baltic States prior to a meeting of NATO defense ministers who were expected to discuss bids by former-Soviet states Ukraine and Georgia to join the alliance, the Voice of America reported.
Gates announced an increase in U.S.-Estonian cooperation, with American funding of an Estonian center to study cybersecurity. Estonian computer systems were attacked last year by hackers believed to be based in Russia.
The hack was viewed internationally as an attempt by Russia to intimidate new NATO members from extending their ties to the West, a policy Gates said wasn't justified.
