Ex-MSU coach Perles running for governor

LANSING, Mich., Nov. 12 (UPI) -- Former Michigan State football coach George Perles says he is running for governor of Michigan in 2010.

Perles, 74, coached the Spartans from 1983-1994 and was elected to the school's board of regents in his first try for political office.

The Detroit News said Wednesday he would run as a Democrat for the office that Gov. Jennifer Granholm will soon vacate due to term limitations.

Perles told the newspaper he would be reaching out to Michigan unions and other Democratic supporters as the campaign gets closer.
