Gale-force winds, rain lash Britain

CHELMSFORD, England, Nov. 11 (UPI) -- Gale-force winds and heavy rains pelted parts of Britain, closing roadways and causing two deaths, and forecasters predicted more bad weather Tuesday.

A man was crushed to death at a building site in Chelmsford, Essex, Monday when wind gusts sent a construction crane spinning out of control, rotating about four times before a block of masonry flew off the cable and landed on him, The Times of London reported.

A 39-year-old motorcycle rider was killed in a road accident as rain lashed down on a highway near Exeter, Devon, and his female passenger was left seriously injured, the Daily Telegraph said.

Wind gusts as high as 89 mph were reported on the Isle of Man and gusts of more than 70 mph were logged Monday along England's South Coast, meteorologists said. Torrential rains flooded businesses, schools and residences, with more than an inch of rain falling in some areas.

Strong winds were predicted to continue Tuesday, particularly in northwest Scotland, before the worst of the weather eases later in the day and on Wednesday, forecasters said.
