WASHINGTON, Nov. 11 (UPI) -- Congressional leaders praised U.S. veterans, praising their service and pledging to take care of them after their tour of duty.
"This Veterans Day, we honor the service and sacrifice of America's veterans and pause to thank those defending us throughout the world today," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said in a statement.
As the United States fights wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, creating the next generation of veterans, Reid said, "we must renew our promise to our troops that we ensure they receive all the support and benefits they have earned."
Without the "brave efforts" of military personnel, "none of us would live as free or be able to enjoy the blessings of liberty," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in a statement.
"As a nation, let it be our pledge that when they return home, we leave no veteran behind," the California Democrat said. "On this Veterans Day, let us all pause to thank our men and women in uniform -- both past and present -- and to say a prayer for those serving today that they may return safely home."
