LONDON, Nov. 10 (UPI) -- Radical Islamic cleric Abu Qatada has been arrested after allegedly breaking the terms of his London home detention, officials said.
British Home Office officials confirmed Qatada, who has been described by the British government as Osama bin Laden's "right-hand man" in Europe, has been arrested but wouldn't comment further, The Daily Telegraph reported Monday,
Qatada was ordered to spend 22 hours per day in his West London apartment in June after a British court found no grounds to deport him to Jordan. But the British tabloid The Sun reported police took Qatada into custody after he allegedly broke those terms and a tipster reported he was planning to flee the country.
Home Secretary Jacqui Smith said in June she was "extremely disappointed" in the court's decision to grant bail to Qatada, while Conservative Party leaders called the decision "offensive," the Telegraph reported.
