ROME, Nov. 10 (UPI) -- Rome Ciampino Airport was closed to air traffic for part of the day Monday after a Ryanair flight from Germany made an emergency landing, officials said.

Officials for the low-cost airlines said the plane experienced engine problems from birds hitting the craft as it was landing at Rome's second-largest airport, the BBC reported.

Passengers exited the plane using its emergency chutes, with three taken to a hospital for minor injuries, the British broadcaster said.

The plane was on the runway with one engine on the tarmac because of damage to landing gear, the BBC reported.
