FBI's terror tracking system improves

WASHINGTON, Nov. 8 (UPI) -- The FBI's system for tracking terrorist threats has gotten better at handling high-priority tips quickly, the U.S. Justice Department inspector general said.

However, the FBI still lets too many low-priority incidents remain in the computer tracking system for longer than a month, said the report from Inspector General Glenn A. Fine.

The so-called Guardian system stored 108,000 threats and suspicious incidents between July 2004 and November 2007 -- most of them tips that amounted to little or nothing, The Washington Post reported Saturday.

Some of the tips did lead agents to open 600 criminal investigations, said the report released Friday.

The Guardian system is a key law enforcement tool because it can be searched by FBI employees and those of other government agencies working to identify trends and patterns in threats.

The FBI is working to correct the issues identified in the report, said FBI Assistant Director John Miller.
