MEXICO CITY, Nov. 8 (UPI) -- Mexican authorities say they have struck twin blows against the country's violent drug gangs by seizing a huge weapons cache and arresting a key gang figure.
Four hundred pistols and rifles, 500,000 bullets, 165 grenades, several grenade launchers, six heavy machine guns and an anti-tank rocket launcher were seized by the Mexican army in Reynosa, officials told the Houston Chronicle.
Assistant Attorney General Marisela Morales told reporters in Mexico City the arsenal "is the largest in the history of Mexico." The weapons were hoarded by the Zetas, a gang of violent enforcers allied with the Gulf Cartel, which operates throughout eastern and central Mexico, police say.
Meanwhile, a key Zeta leader, co-founder Jaime Gonzalez, nicknamed "The Hummer," was arrested by federal police in Reynosa, the newspaper said. Authorities said Gonzales directed Zeta operations in Mexico City and seven Mexican states, and allegedly is a close collaborator to Zeta leaders Heriberto Lazcano and Miguel Trevino.
