OTTAWA, Nov. 8 (UPI) -- A Canadian radio reporter kidnapped four weeks ago in Afghanistan has been released, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported Saturday.

Mellissa Fung was taken by an unidentified group Oct. 12, the CBC said. She had been reporting from Kandahar for the CBC but traveled to Kabul to report on a refugee camp for returnees from Pakistan.

The kidnapping had been kept secret out of concern for Fung's safety.

"In the interest of Mellissa's safety and that of other working journalists in the region, on the advice of security experts, we made the decision to ask media colleagues not to publish news of her abduction," CBC News publisher John Cruickshank said. "All of the efforts made by the security experts were focused on Mellissa's safe and timely release."

Fung was at the Canadian embassy in Kabul. She had been examined by a doctor and appeared to be in good health.
