PRESIDENT JOSEPH KABILA OF THE CONGO VISITS THE UN

NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov. 7 (UPI) -- The Democratic Republic of Congo blames U.N. peacekeepers for doing "nothing" to stop rebels from killing civilians in eastern Congo, a spokesman said.

The comment came as regional leaders met U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon in Nairobi, Kenya, for crisis talks, the BBC reported.

"People are being slaughtered and (UN peacekeepers) did nothing," a spokesman for President Joseph Kabila said.

There also were reports that fresh fighting had broken out between rebels and government troops north of Goma.

Meanwhile, the U.N. said it was investigating reports that rebels led by Laurent Nkunda had killed civilians in their homes in the eastern town of Kiwanja.

Rebels were accused of knocking on doors of houses and, when admitted, opening fire on inhabitants.

Congolese rebels have been fighting government troops in eastern Congo since August, causing tens of thousands of civilians to flee.
