Trailer plunges 5 stories from overpass

TORONTO, Nov. 6 (UPI) -- Ontario provincial safety inspectors were investigating why a trailer loaded with copper scrap broke loose and plunged onto a Toronto highway, killing a man.

The trailer came away from the truck on an overpass Wednesday around 6:20 a.m., and plunged five stories onto traffic on the Queen Elizabeth Way, Ontario Provincial Police spokesman Sgt. Dave Woodford said.

A 53-year-old man was killed, and four others were injured by the debris, which demolished four vehicles, the Toronto Sun reported.

"There was nothing the drivers could do to avoid the trailer ... falling from the sky," Woodford said.

The truck's driver was able to stop the truck, but sustained a broken jaw when the trailer suddenly came away, the Toronto Star reported.

The trailer's 25 tons of scrap copper spewed across all three lanes of the arterial highway, which was closed for more than 12 hours, the Star said.

No charges had been filed as investigators looked into such factors as speed, mechanical failure and driver fatigue, Woodford said.
