PORTLAND, Ore., Nov. 6 (UPI) -- Sen. Gordon Smith, R-Ore., has called Democratic challenger Jeff Merkley Thursday to concede the race and end his 12-year Senate career.

The (Portland) Oregonian said Merkley was expected to declare victory in the hotly contested race later in the day.

The Oregonian said a Merkley aide confirmed the call.

Merkley's win means Oregon will have two Democrats in the Senate for the first time in some 40 years.
