LOS ANGELES, Nov. 6 (UPI) -- Protesters clashed with police in Hollywood as they demonstrated against apparent voter approval of Proposition 8, which bans same-sex marriages.

A Los Angeles Police Department spokesman said the department issued a citywide alert Wednesday requiring available officers to respond to the protest, the Los Angeles Times reported Thursday.

Elsewhere in Los Angeles, between 750 and 1,000 protesters conducted a sit-in on Sunset Boulevard, CNN reported. The demonstrators chanted slogans and banged on a building's glass doors but eventually left without incident.

Semi-official results show that 52.5 percent of Californians supported Proposition Eight, which would ban gay and lesbian marriages.
