Democrats take House seat in Alabama

MONTGOMERY, Ala., Nov. 5 (UPI) -- Democrats picked up a House seat in Alabama Tuesday with Montgomery Mayor Bobby Bright winning in the 2nd District.

Bright edged state Rep. Jay Love 51 percent to 49 percent, The Birmingham News reported.

The Republicans had held the district since 1965, when the Deep South started turning away from the Democrats. Bright, at one point, appeared ready to switch parties and run as a Republican.

Bright replaces Terry Everett, who has represented the district in the southeastern part of the state for eight terms.
