FLAGSTAFF, Ariz., Nov. 5 (UPI) -- Former state legislator Ann Kirkpatrick is expected to win her race for Arizona's 1st Congressional District seat against Republican opponent Sydney Hay.

With 80 percent of precincts reporting, Kirkpatrick led Hay 54 percent to 42 percent. Independent candidate Brent Maupin had less than 4 percent support, returns indicated.

Kirkpatrick will replace U.S. Rep. Rick Renzi, R-Flagstaff, who faces federal corruption charges.

She said Democratic enthusiasm and her campaign volunteers' enthusiasm helped her win the seat, The Arizona Republic reported.

"A year ago in this district, I said we need jobs," Kirkpatrick was quoted by the newspaper as saying.
