ALBUQUERQUE, Nov. 5 (UPI) -- New Mexico's House District 1 went to the Democrats Tuesday, as Martin Heinrich was elected to replace retiring Republican Heather Wilson.

Heinrich, a former Albuquerque City Council member who was most recently a public affairs consultant, outdistanced Bernalillo County Sheriff Darren White, whom he repeatedly portrayed as too chummy with President George W. Bush.

White had attempted to cast Heinrich as an environmental extremist who did not have the interests of New Mexicans at heart.

House District 1 includes Albuquerque, which has a high Latino population. White, who had the endorsement of the Albuquerque Journal, toed a hard line on border security and illegal immigration.
