ALBUQUERQUE, Nov. 4 (UPI) -- Rep. Tom Udall, D-N.M., was declared the winner over Republican Steve Pearce Tuesday in the race for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Pete Domenici.

The Albuquerque Journal declared Udall the winner shortly after the polls closed.

Udall is the son of former Interior Secretary Morris Udall and has solid environmental credentials; however, he also backs conventional energy development in a state with rich natural gas reserves.
