BRUSSELS, Nov. 4 (UPI) -- A NATO military official says he's skeptical of the European Union's plans to put more emphasis on its common security and defense policy.
Karl Eikenberry, a U.S. lieutenant general and deputy chairman of NATO's military committee, told the Security and Defense Days conference in Brussels Monday the EU's plans to carry out more military missions lack sufficient strategic thinking, the EU Observer reported.
Eikenberry said out of the bloc's 20 military missions so far, five were short-term operations in the Democratic Republic of Congo, adding, "I'm not questioning the value of those missions -- they were successful in the relief of pressing humanitarian problems -- but what is the overarching strategic thinking in the EU with regard to the Congo?"
Eikenberry also criticized the EU's "overwhelming preference for soft power" and said the bloc didn't have enough deployable troops despite high levels of defense spending, the Observer reported.
French Interior Minister Michelle Alliot-Marie, however, defended the EU initiative, saying it wasn't aimed at competing with NATO.
