WASHINGTON, Nov. 3 (UPI) -- U.S. leaders said Monday they don't have evidence that Rwanda is supporting rebel insurgents in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Jendayi Frazer said officials couldn't find indications to support claims by the republic's President Joseph Kabila's that Rwanda is supporting the rebel National Congress for the Defense of the People loyal to Laurent Nkunda, Voice of America reported.

The rebels strengthened their hold on towns recently seized from the national army during the weekend.

Meanwhile, U.N. peacekeepers were expected to arrive at the rebel stronghold Monday to help Congolese displaced by fighting.
