Face transplant patient mulls new identity

PARIS, Nov. 3 (UPI) -- The French woman who received the world's first face transplant says she remains uncertain as to who she sees when she looks in the mirror.

"Before the operation, I expected my new face would look like me but it turned out after the operation that it was half me and half her," said Isabelle Dinoire, 41, referring to the dead woman whose face she received three years ago, The Daily Telegraph reported Monday.

"It's not hers, it's not mine, it's somebody else's," Dinoire said on the French channel NT1.

Dinoire's case has been followed closely by doctors in Britain who have received permission from the government to conduct that nation's first face transplant at the Royal Free Hospital in London, the Telegraph reported.

Dinoire, from Valenciennes, received a new nose, mouth and chin after her pet dog attacked her, ripping off part of her face, the British newspaper reported.

Despite struggling to accept her new look, Dinoire said she knows she's "looking at something beautiful" when she looks in the mirror each day.
