Report: Feds seek Kilpatrick fund records

DETROIT, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- Federal officials have subpoenaed the records of former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's nonprofit foundation, sources say.

The nonprofit Kilpatrick Civic Fund, which has taken in more than $1 million since Kilpatrick was elected mayor, has been ordered to turn over copies of payments the fund made dating back several years, unnamed sources told the Detroit Free Press.

Kilpatrick's defense attorneys have also received letters from U.S. prosecutors asking them how they were paid for defending Kilpatrick against perjury and assault charges, the newspaper said.

Kilpatrick resigned as mayor last month after pleading guilty and no-contest to three felonies and is serving a 120-day sentence in the Wayne County Jail.

The Civic Fund's stated purpose is "to promote community activities that enhance" Detroit neighborhoods. But sources told the Free Press the FBI is trying to determine if the former mayor arranged unreported payments to city contractors through the funds.
