Cabbies threaten to sue over lost wages

LONDON, Nov. 1 (UPI) -- Hundreds of cab drivers in England are threatening legal action after their cabs were taken off the road, an attorney said.

The cabs, which were manufactured by London Taxis International, were taken off the road after some of them burst into flames, The Daily Telegraph reported Saturday.

The cabbies say they might sue over lost wages, the newspaper reported.

"Since the recall on September 19, I've been unable to work and over a seven-week period it amounts to thousands in loss of earnings," said London taxi driver Phillip Nash. "I know LTI are struggling to get through the backlog but so close to Christmas when the credit crunch is hitting everyone, it's hard to be patient when I need to take care of my family and I've no income."

LTI says work to make the cabs safe, which includes altering the exhausts, will be completed by Nov. 12.

"We're currently in touch with over 300 black cab drivers affected by the recall and as a result we are in the process of mounting a large class action suit on their behalf against those responsible," said attorney Matthew Phillips.
