WASHINGTON, Oct. 31 (UPI) -- If Sen. Barack Obama wins the presidency, observers expect a quick transition with a new treasury secretary and White House chief of staff named within days.
"They would like to make treasury the first appointment as a symbol and have the other big ones done in the first week" one source close to the Obama transition team told the New York Daily News.
The list of candidates for treasury includes former Clinton administration treasury chief Larry Summers; Timothy Geithner, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and ex-Fed Chairman Paul Volcker, among others, sources familiar with those recommended to Obama say.
U.S. Rep. Rahm Emanuel, D-Ill., was given considerable attention Friday as a potential chief of staff. But, the Daily News said Emanuel probably is more interested in becoming speaker of the House.
Former Senate Democratic leader Tom Daschle, D-S.D., is also a possibility for chief of staff, reports say.
