CLERMONT, Fla., Oct. 30 (UPI) -- A hangman's noose was found near an election sign for Democratic U.S. presidential nominee Barack Obama posted near Clermont, Fla., police say.
Lake County Sheriff's Office Sgt. John Herrell said the noose, which was made of white rope, was found hanging on a barbed-wire fence near the election sign by deputies this week, The Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel said Thursday.
The residents of the home where the sign and noose were found said they had no clue where the noose had come from, but confirmed they had placed the red, white and blue Obama Biden '08 sign in their yard.
While Herrell said placing the noose near the sign does not constitute a crime, a neighbor of the couple's told the Sentinel the act was indicative of white supremacy activities.
"It's unbearably heinous; it's like having the KKK right here in Clermont," resident Barbara Reed said, referring to the Ku Klux Klan white supremacy group.
