TAMPA, Fla., Oct. 30 (UPI) -- A probate court has ordered a new hearing date for the ongoing fight between a Florida man and his sister-in-law regarding the life of a 38-year-old woman.
After an attorney for Florida resident Robert Lavers filed a motion to oppose a medical guardianship claim by Heidi Kaczala, a probate court magistrate ordered a new hearing on the matter for Nov. 25, The Tampa (Fla.) Tribune said Thursday.
At the center of the familial dispute is the life of Lavers' wife and Kaczala's sister, Heather Lavers, who has been in a vegetative state since suffering cardiac arrest six weeks ago.
Attorney Joel Kirkpatrick said Lavers is concerned that if Kaczala's bid for guardianship is approved, she may rule out any extraordinary life-sustaining measures for his wife.
The Tribune said Kaczala already has the right to make basic medical decisions regarding her sister's care but the upcoming hearing will decide which side will have make all end-of-life decisions in the matter.
