DETROIT, Oct. 30 (UPI) -- Detroit Mayor Kenneth Cockrel Jr. says he has coordinated with authorities and volunteers to ensure a safe Devil's Night in the city Thursday.
"What we've really tried to do this year is put together a unique partnership that not only consisted of Detroit city government, not only consisted of Detroit Police Department and Detroit Fire Department," Cockrel said Wednesday, "but also volunteers and personnel from throughout city government, neighborhoods, block clubs, community associations and just everyday citizens that want to just step up and do what they can do to keep their neighborhoods safe."
The Detroit News said Detroit residents have also been asked to turn on their porch lights during the annual event that has been met with violence and arson some years.
