Kilpatrick to get no good time

DETROIT, Oct. 28 (UPI) -- Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick must complete all of his 120-day sentence in the Wayne County, Mich., Jail, a judge ruled Tuesday.

The embattled Democrat was convicted on felony obstruction of justice charges in a political misconduct case. Wayne Circuit Court Judge David Groner, who chastised Kilpatrick for "hubris and privilege," said the former mayor will not be eligible for time off for good behavior, The Detroit News reported Tuesday.

The sentence includes Kilpatrick's punishment for his no-contest plea to the assault of two investigators who tried to serve a subpoena on a friend of his who was at his sister's home.

Prosecutors told the judge they wanted Kilpatrick to pay another $22,000 in restitution in addition to the $1 million he agreed to pay in a Sept. 4 plea deal. The judge denied their request.

Former City General Counsel Sharon McPhail, who represented the mayor during Gov. Jennifer Granholm's hearing on the mayor's possible ouster, called the four-month jail term "overkill," the newspaper reported.

"Here's a guy with no criminal background going to jail. There are people who have killed people out on the streets," McPhail said. "Whatever that was done, hasn't he already paid a big price? Do we need to stomp and grind him into the ground?"
