TIJUANA, Mexico, Oct. 27 (UPI) -- Eduardo Arellano Felix, thought to be an instrumental cog in Mexico's notorious Arellano Felix drug cartel, has been arrested in Mexico, authorities say.

Authorities said during a raid of a home near Tijuana this past weekend, the suspected drug trafficker allegedly fired on agents and soldiers before being captured and air-lifted to Mexico City for questioning, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported Monday.

Eileen Zeidler, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration's San Diego spokeswoman, alleged Felix was the last top leader of the Arellano Felix cartel.

"He is pretty much the last major player of what was once the powerful Arellano Felix organization," Zeidler said regarding Saturday's arrest.

The arrest of Felix comes in the wake of the arrest or capture of all four of his brothers, all linked to the drug cartel.

The crime-fighting efforts have all been a part of cooperation between authorities in Mexico and the United States aimed at eliminating the drug-trafficking group, the Union-Tribune said.
