FORT WORTH, Texas, Oct. 27 (UPI) -- Democrat Barack Obama is the better person to help rebuild the U.S. economy and restore confidence, The Fort Worth (Texas) Star Telegram editorialized Monday.
"Obama provides the prescription for America's ills at this moment," the Star-Telegram endorsement editorial said, citing an "inquisitive intellect" and the knack to articulate his message, an ability to inspire and a temperament "that allows him to weather a barrage of withering personal attacks."
Republican candidate John McCain, whom the newspaper chose as the best during the Republican primaries, was chided by the Star-Telegram for his vice presidential choice, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.
"Had McCain ... selected a woman with more political and governing experience," the editorial read, "it would have demonstrated better judgment and put more credence in his oft-repeated slogan of 'country first.'"
McCain's love of country and public service "are indisputable," the newspaper said, "and under different circumstances, he likely would have been our choice for president."
Obama speaks of working for "the 'more perfect union' that our forefathers envisioned," the newspaper said.
"That is indicative of what Americans can and should expect of a commander in chief when the unexpected occurs -- and it will occur," the editorial said..
