Poll: Canadians see poverty approaching

TORONTO, Oct. 27 (UPI) -- International economic conditions have almost 40 percent of Canadians saying poverty is on their horizon, a poll published Monday said.

The left-of-center Canadian Center for Policy Alternatives commissioned the Environics poll of 2,023 Canadians, and 39 percent said they were "one or two paychecks away from poverty," CTV News reported Monday.

CCPA senior economist Armine Yalnizyan told the broadcaster other figures showed long-term fear and pessimism.

She said 47 percent of those polled were struggling with personal debt regardless of their income, 44 percent were concerned about having insufficient funds to retire and 26 percent said they were worse off than 10 years ago.

As for resolving the anxiety, 90 percent of respondents said the government should take leadership in the anti-poverty effort, the report said.

The date of the poll and margin of error weren't published.
