DAMASCUS, Syria, Oct. 26 (UPI) -- Syrian officials say U.S. troops carried out a raid inside Syria along the Iraqi border Sunday, killing eight people.
The BBC reported that if the account is accurate, it would be the first time there was an incursion by the U.S. military into Syria.
The New York Times said Sunday that Syria's state-run news channel reported that U.S. helicopters attacked an area along the Syrian-Iraqi border, near the town of Abu Kamal.
The Syrian deputy foreign minister reportedly summoned the charge d'affaires from the United States and Iraqi Embassies in protest, the Syrian network SANA reported.
The BBC reported that the American government has said Damascus has not done enough to curb insurgents traveling across its border with Iraq. Syrian officials have said they are being unfairly blamed for turmoil in Iraq.
