OMAHA, Oct. 25 (UPI) -- A Nebraska teenager who claims she is being abused by her mother showed up at a hospital with her baby son, claiming sanctuary under the state's Safe Haven law.
The girl was driven to Immaculate Medical Center in Omaha by her aunt Friday, WOWT-TV in Omaha reported.
Safe Haven laws aim to protect newborn babies, allowing parents to drop them off at hospitals, police stations and firehouses with no questions asked. But Nebraska, the most recent state to adopt a law, did so with no upper age limit.
While a number of older children have been abandoned under the Safe Haven law, the 16-year-old was the first to attempt to use it herself. Court documents show she claims her mother threw her out of the house.
The girl's mother described what happened as a typical mother-daughter argument that had been "blown way out of proportion." A custody hearing has been scheduled for Oct. 30, at which the mother plans to seek to get her daughter back.
