HANOI, Vietnam, Oct. 25 (UPI) -- Former Vietnamese jailers say Republican U.S. presidential candidate John McCain was well treated after his fighter jet was shot down 41 years ago.
"John McCain was never tortured in my jail," said Tran Trong Duyet, one of the jailers and guards interviewed by The Times of London in a story published Saturday.
McCain, who spent 5 1/2 years in Vietnamese prisons after his fighter jet crashed in 1967, has written and spoken of how the crash broke his arms and a knee. Poor medical treatment and severe torture exacerbated the wounds, leaving him with chronic pain today, McCain has said.
McCain's jailers, who talk of treating him like a "crown prince," said they wanted to kill him but were mandated by "Ho Chi Minh ideology" to care for him and treat him well, the Times reported.
"He was very brave, very manly," Duyet said of McCain. "He dared to argue with me and he was very intelligent. But all the talk of being tortured is for the sake of votes."
