NAACP, GOP seek election changes

HARRISBURG, Pa., Oct. 24 (UPI) -- With Election Day fast approaching, Republicans and the NAACP both are seeking legal backstops for voting problems in the state of Pennsylvania, officials say.

The NAACP, the nation's oldest civil rights organization, and other rights groups are seeking a federal court order requiring more than the usual number of emergency paper ballots be on hand at each polling place in the state to guard against long delays due to malfunctioning voting machines.

"An unprecedented interest in voting, a record number of newly registered voters and a well-established history of widespread electronic voting machine failures" could seriously delay voting, the plaintiffs said.

State Republicans are concerned over possible voter registration fraud by ACORN, a nationwide community organization, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Republicans asked for a court order to force ACORN to produce a list of all first-time Pennsylvania voters for whom its workers have filled out registration cards.
