Concerns by Haider's wife stops cremation

VIENNA, Oct. 24 (UPI) -- The wife of Austrian politician Joerg Haider has stopped the cremation of his remains amid concerns the Carinthia governor may have been killed, sources say.

Sources said Haider's wife, Claudia, is concerned that the 58-year-old politician's death on Oct. 11 in a car crash near Klagenfurt may not have been an accident as initially thought, The Daily Telegraph in London said Friday.

The former Alliance for the Future of Austria head was killed after his car hit a pillar and flipped over. Investigators said Haider's blood-alcohol level was nearly four times the legal limit at the time of the crash.

But the sources said the lack of any braking marks at the crash site has led Haider's wife to suspect the Austrian official may have been drugged.

The Daily Telegraph said the concerned woman withdrew her husband's remains from a scheduled cremation last Saturday and is calling for an autopsy of his remains.
