Feds target alleged Chinatown gang in N.Y.

NEW YORK, Oct. 23 (UPI) -- Eleven reputed mobsters arrested in federal raids in New York's Chinatown district are facing numerous criminal charges, an indictment says.

A federal indictment alleges the suspects arrested in this week's anti-gang efforts ran illegal gambling operations and sold drugs in Chinatown, the New York Post said Thursday.

Investigators alleged the members of the so-called Banya Organization also attempted to extort funds from two interstate bus companies. The group is also suspected of organizing a 2005 kidnapping and trafficking the horse tranquilizer ketamine.

The indictment alleges the suspected criminal organization, which also operated in New York's Queens borough, earned at least $10 million through its various illegal operations.

Authorities said 10 of the suspects arrested this week pleaded innocent to related charges in court Wednesday night and are being held without bail, the Post reported.
