Russia tests ICBM

MOSCOW, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- Russia announced a successful test launch of a nuclear-capable intercontinental ballistic missile Wednesday.

Strategic Missile Forces said the RS-18, also known as the SS-19 Stiletto, lifted off from the Baikonur space center in Kazakhstan en route to an unspecified target.

"The launch confirmed the decision to extend the service life of one of our most reliable missile complexes," the SMF said in a written statement.

The RIA Novosti news agency said the Stiletto has been in service for nearly 30 years and is considered highly reliable. It is to be replaced by the RS-24.

RIA Novosti said the launch was the latest in an increased testing program by Russia's missile forces.
